Final Cut, Week 1

July 25th, 2008

I’ve been spending my last week in Providence learning a bit of FinalCut Pro, thanks to my friend Jerzy who lets me hang out int the media lab. Learning the program has been shockingly fun and, much to my surprise, intuitive both artistically and technologically. While I’ve only scratched the surface of this program, I already feel like I could see what I want to on screen…if I only had the right footage.

Day 1

I need to want to got to try to get back in the media lab and wok with this program. The way I see it, I can give myself little directing and editing projects while learning a wickedly fun computer program.

Why didn’t I try this before? Because you’re technologically retarded. No longer. Time to learn how to make moving picture shows.

Day 2

The first project I did was to un-blooper a blooper reel from “House.” Once I had satisfied my desire to set the scenes right, I decided to make one of the scenes a scene from a 40’s detective flick. I was kind of proud of that little sequence, but wasn’t worth keeping, but at least I have now filtered, cropped, and zoomed some footage.

I play scrabble in the lab with Jerzy and Nina. I realized that we’ve played scrabble together almost everyday this summer. Jerzy’s a genius for thinking to bring the board along to work.

Day 3

My first actual project.  Again, I still have no footage of my own. The results of the project will eventually be posted here, but I can’t figure out how to share it with you yet. I think tomorrow will inevitably bring me back to the lab. I’m seriously hooked. And really want to learn how to share this video.

After making a fun video with footage from an explanational video of eyelid surgery, I was more than thrilled when my friend Jay Gidwitz gave me a short animation sequence that he had made. (You can look at his artwork at http://www.jaygidwitz.com/ )

He told me to have at it. So I did.

It’s a lot harder to make something great look better than to make something awful look cool.

I’ll post it when it’s done, which will probably be tomorrow.

An experiment…

Welcome to my website!

The gist is simple- the site is a vehicle for self-promotion. Whose website isn’t? While I hope that you will continue to check back for new videos, posts, etc. all I can really ask for is that you read a bit of my writing, watch a video or two (once I add them) and check out some of the shows I’ve worked on. And then hire me- or tell someone who can that I’m awesome.
